Research Journnal Part Ten

Research Journal Part Ten
Here's my link http://letteraday.org/students/mlongo.html

Summary: This project teaches the use of HTML, and teaches student's how web pages are made from HTML code. This exercise teaches how to use FTP and upload a page that a student has created. We learned how to edit the page we created, and post a link that points to it on our blog site. This chapter taught a great example of how client/server protocol is done. My link is above, and it works.

Research Journal Part Eight: plagiarism

Research Journal Part Eight: Plagiarism

1.  Last summer, my family and I traveled to Chicago, which was quite different from the rural area I grew up in. We saw the dinosaur Sue at the Field Museum, and ate pizza at Gino's East.

This does not need to be cited, as it is a first person’s experience.

2.  Americans want to create a more perfect union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for everybody.

This statement should be cited as it appears to be from another source other than the writers, and it is stating opinion about other than himself.
According to (provide the source) Americans want ....yada yada yada ;o)

3. I find it ridiculous that 57% of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework.

The writer states his opinion (not requiring citing) but put in a statistic that may be common knowledge. Since, it is only one sentence. I will go with, not cited, assuming that 57% is common knowledge. The author could have said “over half” instead of giving a statistic.

3.  Martin Luther King was certain that nobody would want to be contented with a surfacy type of social analysis that concerns itself only with effects and doesn't deal with root causes.

4.  Needs to be cited, it is a summary of the above article. Author could paraphrase, and add citation.

5. Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).

This one is good. It introduces the author, as well as citing the quote from from the article.

5.  In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations."

Needs to be cited; because of use of direct quotes to an article. Introducing the author is not enough here.

I would add the page numbers behind the quote.

7. My friend Kara told me that she loves living so close to the ocean.

This one is fine.

8. Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for peaceful meetings.

The statement needs to be cited.  The statement implies the author is speaking for others without proof, and referring to himself.

I think Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for a peaceful meeting.

Plagiarism Summary: Students need to be aware that improper citing still equals plagiarism, it is very important to properly use the rules of citation. Any use of anyone’s intellectual material without acknowledgement is plagiarism. The rule of thumb is if you did not create it, give credit to the source that did. You don’t need to cite your own ideas and experiences, as that is a primary source.  If you summarize an idea of someone else’s it needs to be quoted. Always cite any statistics, charts, tables and graphs.  Same goes for images, photos, or graphics that are not yours.

5. Post an entry in my blog

What is "E-Learning" and how does it affect college student's studies?
I dropped the search parameter "success" to broaden my search. I used ProQuest for this project.

1) (E-Learning OR "Online Education") AND "College Students"

2) I chose this magazine article because it covered the topic well. The article is recent, and very up to date in regards to the E-Learning tecnology. The article is also very specific to my search.
RebeccaU.S. News & World Report 1 May 2010: Research Library, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
3) I chose this scholarly journal because it explains how E-Learning is performing in education.  It is an in depth case study on all aspects of E-learning. The abstract was interesting to me, and right on my topic search.
Halawi, L., S. Pires, and R. McCarthy. "An Evaluation of E-Learning on the Basis of Bloom's Taxonomy: An Exploratory Study. " Journal of Education for Business 84.6 (2009): 374-380. Research Library, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
4) I chose this newspaper article because I like the concept of education changing with the advancement of technology.  This article was full of interesting stats.
Jack P Calareso. "Campus traditions changing. " Telegram & Gazette 21 Oct. 2009,ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
5) Summary:  For this project my search statement went through a few changes, because my topic is a new technology I needed to broaden my search.  I'm used to having to many hits, and was surprised that a narrow search did not turn up much.  By eliminating keywords I was able to find articles that were exactly on topic for my search.  I tried variations of (affect AND success*) but my topic was too new for them to be effective. I learned new topics will have far less data on a subject, and a broad searches will work better. I also realized my question was very specific, and kind of wished I would have used a different one considering the topic. I thought it to be relevent to what we are doing in class, and I did learn a lot looking through the data available in ProQuest.

Project Summary

From the four tools compared I found the Cannell Library the most useful for my topic. Cannell has an easy to use interface, and has the pertinent data for the books listed on the hits of the search. With Cannell I found it easy to skim for books on the topic because of the information provided on the hit criteria. I did not have to waste time searching a book to see if it was what I was looking for.

IT Pro had advanced features that I think would be very useful in looking for very specific information, as with technical data. IT Pro has the most search features with the advanced search filters. Having the ability to use multiple filters simultaneously would be the most effective tool.

Summit Books was similar to cannel, however it seems broader in nature regarding search criteria. Summit required me to change my search parameter to find the same topic. All the other tools worked well with the “E-Learning” search topic. For Summit I changed the seach parameter to "online Education" as E-Learning was not effective.

I liked Google books, but didn’t like the format of the books presented. They’ve disabled the ability to copy text from the page, and that is a very useful tool for collecting, and presenting research data. Finding the work cited information in Google was also a challenge, as you have to dig it out of the book itself. I much prefer to have the citation the description for the skimming process. Google books interface is also very clunky, and not easy to read.

Each tool has different attributes that can be helpful, and it depends on the topic one is researching on which one would suit you best. They do provide a great contrast for comparison of data on any topic.

If any of the interfaces changed I would just use the tutorial to adjust.

The book is in its third edition, and is available in both paper, and E-book form.  The book also has a long list of credited contributors, and is used for education.

IT Pro Collection of E-books.

In IT Pro I found the advanced search parameters interesting. The “All Content” brought 2099 titles related to the search term” home PC”.  The “Code Listing” brought 64 titles that were of a more focused technical nature.  The “In Notes” selection provided the same results as the “Code Listing” selection.  For the “Title” selection I got one very generalized book on “How To” for the search “Home PC”.

I changed the search parameters by using “computers” instead of “PC” and got different results. I got 32 hits in “Code Listing and In Notes” and 2032 hits in by using the “All titles” selection.  By using the advanced search selection process I learned that each advanced parameter could produce different results. The advanced search parameters help provide a more focused search.

Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat based diet? "revised"

For the "Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat based diet? " research question I used "Open & Deep Web" because "Open Web" let me make a direct comparison in one article and the "Deep Web" explored each side of the story.

I used the G.V.R.L. for the "Deep Web" part of the research, and now I understand why you told me how important it is to be thorough. I skimmed several articles there, and found that I had to explore each part of the question separately, and formulate my own conclusion. I haven't used the "Deep Web" much before, and will have to work on my skills in its use. The search parameters are much more focused than the "Open Web". Any suggestions on performing a more effective search?

I should have explained my answer further on my three questions regarding G.V.R.L. I knew the data for those questions were there, because I read the articles relating to my questions. I had a feeling we would have to answer them at some point, and worked ahead a little. I'll continue to work on improving the detail of my projects as we go. Many thanks for another go at the question! :o)

What is "E-Learning" and how does it affect college student’s studies?

For the "What is "E-Learning" and how does it affect college student’s studies?” research question I would use the "Deep Web" because I used the "G.V.R.L." to come up with the question, and there is much creditable date there.

What steps can an average Internet user take to prevent computer crime?

For the "What steps can an average Internet user take to prevent computer crime?" research question I would use the "Deep Web" because I used the "G.V.R.L." to come up with the question, and there is much creditable data there.

How does "tracing and tracking" affect the average Internet user?

For the "How does "tracing and tracking" affect the average Internet user?" research question I would use the "deep web" for information. Because I came up with the question using the "Gale Virtual Reference Library" as there is much information on the topic that is credible.

Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global warming?

For the "Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global warming?" research question I would use the open web for current information, and look for scholarly/academic publishers for statistical background information. I would need both resources to establish a trend using both current and statistical data.

Should educators use commercial services to combat plagiarism?

For the “Should educators use commercial services to combat plagiarism?” research question an “.edu” would be most useful because this a topic pertaining to higher education, and an “.edu” site would be going directly to the source for information.

How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over someone with a high school diploma?

For the “How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over someone with a high school diploma?” research question a “.gov or .edu “would be most useful because they provide a credible source of statistics and have databases dedicated to the topic.

Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have their CDs sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?

The answer is no. I referred to "My World" on this one, as in this instant I will qualify myself as an expert on the subject. I'm a professional musician that records, and has researched the topic, and its rules for decades.

Music is an entertainment media, and the rules that apply to all other media in the form of ratings also apply to music. Music falls under the FCC rules to get airplay, and musicians must filter their content if they hope to be on the radio, or television. On the internet this appears to be voluntary as YouTube has many bands have both altered and unedited versions of the same song. The difference is you have to sign in, and prove age verification to listen to the uncensored version.  Other bands have uncensored songs available without signing in.

Target is using the same protocol as the FCC guidelines. One might think that having the CD labeled “Explicit lyrics” would be enough.  Target is a family store, and as such doesn’t want to sell anything with adult content. Simply putting the rating on a CD would be equivalent to putting the rating X on a hardcore adult movie.

I think it is fair to ask musicians that want their music to be played in public venues to be asked to keep it clean. In my personal experience I have been told what a band can’t play in certain venues. I believe a good musician should be able to express themselves without the use of profanity.  The only time profanity is appropriate in music is when it is the best adjective used by the writer to describe their feeling, not just saying it for shock or entertainment value. If it is used a musician should be aware of the limitation of using adult content.

Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat based diet?

For (Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat based diet?) research question the “Open Web” would be most useful because it provides a variety of opinion as this a very popular topic. I’m very interested in this topic, and first skimmed the web to Wikipedia. After that I went to wise geek as there are articles from experts on the topic. The answer is a vegetarian diet is far healthier than a meat based diet. A statistic from Wikipedia stated a person with a vegetarian diet is up to 40% healthier than one eating a meat based diet. The stats on Wise Geek were the same.

After reading about it I was really turned off to eating meat, as there are many unappetizing and unhealthy aspects of consuming meat. I try to stay with poultry and seafood as part of my fitness program. I learned that poultry is not safe due to the way it’s processed. The perfect diet for me would be veggies and seafood. I would still have to give in to the occasional steak on the barbecue though. Surf and turf is a favorite of mine when barbecuing. :o)

My World.

We had a very cool topic in class today about children, as I believe kid's definately react to what they see and hear. I made a "front yard" comment today as I've been surounded by a mob of kid's for decades. Here's a typical day in my world, I hope it makes you smile. :o)

Project Summary

I learned in this activity the benefits of using a “Deep Web” database versus an “Open Web” database. When comparing the (Gale Virtual Reference Library) to (Wikipedia) I found (G.V.R.L.) to be a more refined source for research. I appreciated the citing information being included in the page, and trusted the information provided more than I did with Wikipedia. I found both databases easy to use; however Wikipedia was much broader, and not as easy to narrow the search parameters.

I will be using the Gale Virtual Reference Library for my research projects after making this comparison. I will still use Wikipedia as an alternate source. This was a great activity on learning research protocol, and I will be working to refine the skills obtained from the project.

Three Research Questions

Here are my three research questions focused from the search term "Internet'.

1. How does "tracing and tracking" affect the average Internet user?
2. What steps can an average Internet user take to prevent computer crime?
3. What is "E-Learning" and how does it affect college students studies?

For the “Wikipedia” part of this project using the broad search term “Internet” I found the article “E-Learning”.  I used the “cite this page tool” in the article, and I had to look up in “Wikipedia Help” how to do that. It was an extra step not needed in the (Gale Virtual Reference Library).  The method used to cite the article is different to “G.V.R.L.” and are as follows:

List of key words from the article are:

1.       Virtual education

2.       Higher education

3.       K-12 learning

4.       Computer Based Training

5.       Moodle

6.       Internet

7.       Web 2.0

8.       Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL)

9.       Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

10.   Academic Degrees

11.   Computer Aided Assessment

12.   Audio

13.   Visual

14.   Special education

15.   Online Learning Communities

16.   Open Source

17.   Collaborative Learning

18.   Distance Learning

19.   Media Psychology

20.   Screen casting

Internet Tracking and Tracing

I used the (Gale Virtual Reference Library) for the research of this topic related to the broad search term the (Internet), and found the article “internet Tracking and Tracing” by Brian Hoyle.  The source of this article is “Encyclopedia of Espionage, Intelligence and Security” Ed. K. Lee Lerner and Brenda Wilmoth Lerner. Vol. 2 Detroit: Gale 2004 P147-148.

Here’s a list of key words related to the article:

1.       Tracking

2.       Tracing

3.       Cookies

4.       Bug

5.       Beacons

6.       IP address

7.       Active X

8.       Java Script

9.       Tracing E-mail

10.   Chat Rooms

11.   Privacy

12.   Hackers

13.   Operating System

14.   Marketing Tool

15.   Spam

16.   Virus

17.   Personal Computer

18.   Internet crime

19.   Identity theft

20.   Bot Net

I found this article interesting due to most internet users are unaware of all that goes on behind the scenes while using the web.

Netiquette

Greetings,

I just went over the rules of netiquette to be sure my page is in compliance, and to be sure I have a comfortable layout for my instructor. I was thinking about setting up a new blog for the class; however this one will serve just fine as long as I follow the guidelines of the class. The reason I'd like to keep this blog going is once the quarter ends it will be a page I made in school. The personal style of the blog is just me, but for the class I'll be happy to change it if there is another layout you prefer. This is a very cool class, and I'm planning on doing a good job with all projects provided. Here's to a great quarter! Cheers!

Staying on task

I've wanted to setup a music page for quite some time, and this class is the perfect opportunity to do just that. I had fun setting up the page, but wasn't thinking about how this would affect my class. For this quarter at Clark the page will be for my research class, after that I'll keep it all music. I'm looking forward to the class, and getting college credit for playing online.

first blog

Greetings All,
For my summary of this assignment I learned that each social networking site has slightly different ways of setting up an account. I have a Facebook page, and an old myspace page, both are a variety of areas of my life. I dedicated this blog to guitar, and I'm very happy to have a place to do just that, and not include all the other fluff. I think a digital workplace in the cloud is an awesome thing. It is an archive that requires no paper, and lasts forever.
I was inspired by the video for details on the blog setup. I'm really looking forward to playing with this page. I hope you all enjoy my posts, and I promise to try and keep it entertaining!
