5. Post an entry in my blog

What is "E-Learning" and how does it affect college student's studies?
I dropped the search parameter "success" to broaden my search. I used ProQuest for this project.

1) (E-Learning OR "Online Education") AND "College Students"

2) I chose this magazine article because it covered the topic well. The article is recent, and very up to date in regards to the E-Learning tecnology. The article is also very specific to my search.
RebeccaU.S. News & World Report 1 May 2010: Research Library, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
3) I chose this scholarly journal because it explains how E-Learning is performing in education.  It is an in depth case study on all aspects of E-learning. The abstract was interesting to me, and right on my topic search.
Halawi, L., S. Pires, and R. McCarthy. "An Evaluation of E-Learning on the Basis of Bloom's Taxonomy: An Exploratory Study. " Journal of Education for Business 84.6 (2009): 374-380. Research Library, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
4) I chose this newspaper article because I like the concept of education changing with the advancement of technology.  This article was full of interesting stats.
Jack P Calareso. "Campus traditions changing. " Telegram & Gazette 21 Oct. 2009,ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
5) Summary:  For this project my search statement went through a few changes, because my topic is a new technology I needed to broaden my search.  I'm used to having to many hits, and was surprised that a narrow search did not turn up much.  By eliminating keywords I was able to find articles that were exactly on topic for my search.  I tried variations of (affect AND success*) but my topic was too new for them to be effective. I learned new topics will have far less data on a subject, and a broad searches will work better. I also realized my question was very specific, and kind of wished I would have used a different one considering the topic. I thought it to be relevent to what we are doing in class, and I did learn a lot looking through the data available in ProQuest.

Project Summary

From the four tools compared I found the Cannell Library the most useful for my topic. Cannell has an easy to use interface, and has the pertinent data for the books listed on the hits of the search. With Cannell I found it easy to skim for books on the topic because of the information provided on the hit criteria. I did not have to waste time searching a book to see if it was what I was looking for.

IT Pro had advanced features that I think would be very useful in looking for very specific information, as with technical data. IT Pro has the most search features with the advanced search filters. Having the ability to use multiple filters simultaneously would be the most effective tool.

Summit Books was similar to cannel, however it seems broader in nature regarding search criteria. Summit required me to change my search parameter to find the same topic. All the other tools worked well with the “E-Learning” search topic. For Summit I changed the seach parameter to "online Education" as E-Learning was not effective.

I liked Google books, but didn’t like the format of the books presented. They’ve disabled the ability to copy text from the page, and that is a very useful tool for collecting, and presenting research data. Finding the work cited information in Google was also a challenge, as you have to dig it out of the book itself. I much prefer to have the citation the description for the skimming process. Google books interface is also very clunky, and not easy to read.

Each tool has different attributes that can be helpful, and it depends on the topic one is researching on which one would suit you best. They do provide a great contrast for comparison of data on any topic.

If any of the interfaces changed I would just use the tutorial to adjust.

Google books provides an about this book selection which further describes the book.

The book is in its third edition, and is available in both paper, and E-book form.  The book also has a long list of credited contributors, and is used for education.

IT Pro Collection of E-books.

In IT Pro I found the advanced search parameters interesting. The “All Content” brought 2099 titles related to the search term” home PC”.  The “Code Listing” brought 64 titles that were of a more focused technical nature.  The “In Notes” selection provided the same results as the “Code Listing” selection.  For the “Title” selection I got one very generalized book on “How To” for the search “Home PC”.

I changed the search parameters by using “computers” instead of “PC” and got different results. I got 32 hits in “Code Listing and In Notes” and 2032 hits in by using the “All titles” selection.  By using the advanced search selection process I learned that each advanced parameter could produce different results. The advanced search parameters help provide a more focused search.

This book is designed to educate, and it is linked to multiple community colleges. This book is written by multiple scholars, and is current in its topic.
This search was different because I had to use more than one search term to find the topic I was looking for. E-learning did not work as well as Online Education to narrow down the topic.
