Research Journnal Part Ten

Research Journal Part Ten
Here's my link http://letteraday.org/students/mlongo.html

Summary: This project teaches the use of HTML, and teaches student's how web pages are made from HTML code. This exercise teaches how to use FTP and upload a page that a student has created. We learned how to edit the page we created, and post a link that points to it on our blog site. This chapter taught a great example of how client/server protocol is done. My link is above, and it works.

Research Journal Part Eight: plagiarism

Research Journal Part Eight: Plagiarism

1.  Last summer, my family and I traveled to Chicago, which was quite different from the rural area I grew up in. We saw the dinosaur Sue at the Field Museum, and ate pizza at Gino's East.

This does not need to be cited, as it is a first person’s experience.

2.  Americans want to create a more perfect union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for everybody.

This statement should be cited as it appears to be from another source other than the writers, and it is stating opinion about other than himself.
According to (provide the source) Americans want ....yada yada yada ;o)

3. I find it ridiculous that 57% of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework.

The writer states his opinion (not requiring citing) but put in a statistic that may be common knowledge. Since, it is only one sentence. I will go with, not cited, assuming that 57% is common knowledge. The author could have said “over half” instead of giving a statistic.

3.  Martin Luther King was certain that nobody would want to be contented with a surfacy type of social analysis that concerns itself only with effects and doesn't deal with root causes.

4.  Needs to be cited, it is a summary of the above article. Author could paraphrase, and add citation.

5. Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).

This one is good. It introduces the author, as well as citing the quote from from the article.

5.  In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations."

Needs to be cited; because of use of direct quotes to an article. Introducing the author is not enough here.

I would add the page numbers behind the quote.

7. My friend Kara told me that she loves living so close to the ocean.

This one is fine.

8. Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for peaceful meetings.

The statement needs to be cited.  The statement implies the author is speaking for others without proof, and referring to himself.

I think Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for a peaceful meeting.

Plagiarism Summary: Students need to be aware that improper citing still equals plagiarism, it is very important to properly use the rules of citation. Any use of anyone’s intellectual material without acknowledgement is plagiarism. The rule of thumb is if you did not create it, give credit to the source that did. You don’t need to cite your own ideas and experiences, as that is a primary source.  If you summarize an idea of someone else’s it needs to be quoted. Always cite any statistics, charts, tables and graphs.  Same goes for images, photos, or graphics that are not yours.

5. Post an entry in my blog

What is "E-Learning" and how does it affect college student's studies?
I dropped the search parameter "success" to broaden my search. I used ProQuest for this project.

1) (E-Learning OR "Online Education") AND "College Students"

2) I chose this magazine article because it covered the topic well. The article is recent, and very up to date in regards to the E-Learning tecnology. The article is also very specific to my search.
RebeccaU.S. News & World Report 1 May 2010: Research Library, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
3) I chose this scholarly journal because it explains how E-Learning is performing in education.  It is an in depth case study on all aspects of E-learning. The abstract was interesting to me, and right on my topic search.
Halawi, L., S. Pires, and R. McCarthy. "An Evaluation of E-Learning on the Basis of Bloom's Taxonomy: An Exploratory Study. " Journal of Education for Business 84.6 (2009): 374-380. Research Library, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
4) I chose this newspaper article because I like the concept of education changing with the advancement of technology.  This article was full of interesting stats.
Jack P Calareso. "Campus traditions changing. " Telegram & Gazette 21 Oct. 2009,ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry, ProQuest. Web. 19 May. 2012.
5) Summary:  For this project my search statement went through a few changes, because my topic is a new technology I needed to broaden my search.  I'm used to having to many hits, and was surprised that a narrow search did not turn up much.  By eliminating keywords I was able to find articles that were exactly on topic for my search.  I tried variations of (affect AND success*) but my topic was too new for them to be effective. I learned new topics will have far less data on a subject, and a broad searches will work better. I also realized my question was very specific, and kind of wished I would have used a different one considering the topic. I thought it to be relevent to what we are doing in class, and I did learn a lot looking through the data available in ProQuest.

Project Summary

From the four tools compared I found the Cannell Library the most useful for my topic. Cannell has an easy to use interface, and has the pertinent data for the books listed on the hits of the search. With Cannell I found it easy to skim for books on the topic because of the information provided on the hit criteria. I did not have to waste time searching a book to see if it was what I was looking for.

IT Pro had advanced features that I think would be very useful in looking for very specific information, as with technical data. IT Pro has the most search features with the advanced search filters. Having the ability to use multiple filters simultaneously would be the most effective tool.

Summit Books was similar to cannel, however it seems broader in nature regarding search criteria. Summit required me to change my search parameter to find the same topic. All the other tools worked well with the “E-Learning” search topic. For Summit I changed the seach parameter to "online Education" as E-Learning was not effective.

I liked Google books, but didn’t like the format of the books presented. They’ve disabled the ability to copy text from the page, and that is a very useful tool for collecting, and presenting research data. Finding the work cited information in Google was also a challenge, as you have to dig it out of the book itself. I much prefer to have the citation the description for the skimming process. Google books interface is also very clunky, and not easy to read.

Each tool has different attributes that can be helpful, and it depends on the topic one is researching on which one would suit you best. They do provide a great contrast for comparison of data on any topic.

If any of the interfaces changed I would just use the tutorial to adjust.
